Chapter Fifteen

Beth opened her eyes and slowly looked around the private room. It was sparse, but comfortable, consisting of a bed, a nightstand, a TV, and a couple of hardback chairs for visitors. She’d just spent the morning in the Massachusetts General Hospital, and was under close observation by the medical staff, who looked in on her every few hours, in case any unforeseen complications arose.

She glanced at the clock on her nightstand. It was almost eleven in the morning, and she felt guilty for still being in bed at this time of the day. A loud rap sounded at the door and she could see Ethan’s beautiful smiling face through the observation window. It was real good to see her man, striding toward her. The man who’d saved her life.

His eyes swept appreciatively over her, and he leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Thank God you’re okay, honey. I’ve bought flowers and candy to cheer you up.”

“Flowers? You’ve bought the whole florist.”

Laughter lines creased his face. “It’s worth it, just to see you smile again. You look so much better this morning, little one.” His voice seemed even deeper. She guessed the acrid smoke from the fire was still in his lungs. He’d risked his life to save hers, and she would never forget that.

She forced a smile. He looked fine as though nothing had really happened. His gorgeous dark brown hair still fell disheveled around his handsome face just as it always had. Although, she guessed he hadn’t been sleeping well, because on closer inspection he looked a little tired around those wonderful green eyes of his. He was her knight in shining armor.

With hindsight she realized she’d had plenty of time to flee her apartment before the fire took hold, but the inevitability of being shot dead as soon as she stepped from the building had made her stay. It had been far easier to allow her thoughts to drift. In some strange way the smoke swirling around her had almost become her friend. It sounded crazy now, and she shook her head in disbelief. Why the fuck didn’t I just run from the apartment and take my chances? She guessed she’d never know for sure. Fear was the most powerful negative emotion a human being could experience, and she figured it had overwhelmed her, paralyzed her. She knew as she inhaled the thick black air that it would eventually send her into a long, peaceful sleep well before the flames seared her flesh. That acceptance had calmed her in the moments before Ethan heroically came to her rescue.

How long she lay curled in a fetal ball, she couldn’t now recall. Lying there waiting to die, she slowly became aware of an apparition as it wove its way through the burning remnants of her home. At first she’d believed it to be a messenger sent by Leon Nassau, intent on snuffing out her very existence. Then she’d heard the masked man speak, “Beth, it’s me, Ethan. It’s Ethan,” and suddenly she’d been given a lifeline—a chance to live.
